I remember seeing your name in a related thread when I did a 
search before posting!

Unless the ISP was purposely blocking Usenet packets, they 
wouldn't have any connection with the problem, I'm pretty sure.

I just did that!  I hope they can give me some answers and 
save me from long sessions with the NNTP protocol manual
and the network packet analyzer Ethereal (now unfortunately 
renamed "Wireshark").  Actually Ethereal is pretty good at 
rendering various protocol packets into human-readable form,
so maybe it wouldn't be too bad.

Steven, many thanks for all this info!  You've focussed the search 
even more closely on Astraweb!  And the articles you've listed will 
be very handy for further investigation and verifying the solution 
once we have one.
