I'm not sure that the message is any better than the original:

"error (maybe: virtual memory exhausted)"

99% of the time, it will be reporting virtual memory exhausted accurately - 
the "maybe" case is where something is missing, causing NULL return values 
that are misinterpreted by higher layers as out of memory.  The current 
message is problematic because it raises questions as to what is really going 
on.  Any replacement should reduce the number of questions raised, if 
possible.

Leaving the patch open and unapplied for now, to see if anyone can quickly 
come up with a better message.

(See Michael, you aren't the only one who has his patches questioned - they 
are all evaluated under the same criteria).
