hmm, I had already tried setting /etc/ld.so.conf with no luck, but
Remon's solution seems to have worked, as does the export
LD_LIBRARY_PATH suggestion.  Unfortunately in both cases the resultant
binary is very unstable and the the output driver generally crashes
before I can do anything (null driver crashes too, so traverso exits).
so I will wait for a slightly more stable release.  meanwhile still
don't understand the alsa issue, tried compiling the current release
(0.30.1) with the same ALSA change Remon suggested for
src/engine/AlsaDriver.cpp, and everything started crashng instead;
sbsequent messing about seems to reveal something's not clean on my
system, will have to return to this a bit later, who knows, maybe 0.40
will be out and I will mess around with that instead.  more soon,
