While you may well have found a bug, that is the wrong way to access news.
The correct way is to set the environment variable NNTPSERVER and then
use news:*.

The form you are using was historically a variant of nntp:, except that
I think it is illegal even for that without the / and newsgroup.

Because of abuse by Netscape, nntp and news have now been merged into
just news, but I still  believe the form you used is illegal.
