It's not that the importer needs to be designed any different.
That's just a small part of the equation. The whole question
boils down to: Do we MUST/HAVE TO change anything in the
backend (re tracking) before we can release a 0.1-able version
thereof ? I don't think so.

Not in my experience. I haven't had much trouble.
