I am keen on LDAP too.
Drawbacks are that the underlying data model is simplicistic and not requiring 
adherence to good relational principles (this would be out of our control, 
LDAP server implementation dependent)

... but the advantages are huge:
- seamless integration with Office suits
- seamless integration with email clients
- seamless integration with X.509 certificate authorities
without any import/export nonsense.

I remember we had discussed this before. I would now vote to implement the 
gnumed demographic service based on LDAP. All we would need to do is agree on 
a standard way to tag a unique gnumed person identifier onto every LDAP 
entry.
